Changes to Commercial MongoDB Licensing and Availability
Changes to Commercial MongoDB Licensing and Availability
MongoDB has historically been available as a certified container stack. Due to changes in commercial licensing and vendor-side availability, commercial MongoDB editions can no longer be offered through the platform.
Background
Earlier MongoDB releases, prior to version 4.0.4, were available free of charge. Later versions required a paid license following changes to MongoDB Inc.’s terms.
For a limited period, commercial MongoDB 6 and 7 could be provided for an additional fee. Following further vendor-side changes, commercial MongoDB editions can no longer be offered through the platform.
What Changes
What Remains Unchanged
- Free MongoDB versions earlier than 4.0.4 remain available on the platform.
- These older versions are already end-of-life (EOL), so they should be used with awareness of their limitations.
- MongoDB can still be deployed as a custom Docker image. Such deployments are fully self-managed and outside these licensing restrictions.
Options Going Forward
- Consider supported alternatives such as Percona or PostgreSQL.
- Run a self-managed MongoDB Docker image for newer versions.
- Continue using free pre-4.0.4 MongoDB stacks while considering their EOL status.
Summary
Commercial MongoDB versions 4.0.4 and higher are no longer provided as supported platform stacks, and their related DBaaS automation is unavailable. Older free MongoDB versions remain available but are EOL. Newer MongoDB versions can be run through a self-managed Docker image, or users can consider supported database alternatives.
